L'Europa Deporta - Europe Deports

Un’esperienza di ricerca sociale partecipativa e, allo stesso tempo, un
esperimento di fotografia documentaria.
“L’Europa deporta” nasce dall’esigenza di un gruppo di rifugiati politici
ospitati presso una struttura della provincia di Varese di informare
circa la legislazione europea in materia di asilo politico. Per far sapere
che un assurdo regolamento comunitario obbliga i richiedenti asilo
a tornare nel primo paese europeo in cui hanno fatto ingresso – in
sostanza deportandoli – aspettando che i lenti tempi burocratici facciano
il proprio corso.
Il libro riporta la storia del viaggio di cinque ragazzi e vi associa un lavoro
fotografico.
La parte visuale del testo rifugge però il sensazionalismo, sostituendovi
consapevolmente il distacco della tecnica dello still life: oggetti simbolo
scelti da alcuni richiedenti asilo per rappresentare il proprio bagaglio
lungo il cammino.

This book is the result of a combination of an experience in participative
social research and an experiment in documentary photography.
“Europe deports” focuses on a group of refugee seekers living in a refugee
centre in the province of Varese that seeks to shed light on European
laws on asylum. It focuses on an absurd communitarian regulation
that forces refugee seekers to return to the first European country
in which they entered to ask for protection and wait for bureaucracy
to take its course – effectively deporting them.
The book recounts the life stories of five refugees, complemented with
photographic works.
The visual component shirks sensationalism, instead using the still life
technique: presenting objects chosen by the refugee seekers themselves
to represent the things they brought with them during their journeys
to Europe.
